Fitzgerald experienced tremendous success with the single «Safety-Pin Stuck in My Heart» during the punk era and the ultimate punk love song has been covered by artists such as Chumbawamba, The Wonder Stuff, the Bartlebees and many others. His debut album on Polydor called Grubby Stories still remains a touchstone for many who experienced his simple acoustic angry ballads and bitter humour.

Although never making it to the dizzy heights of pop fame he continues to be a well respected figure, cited as an influence by author and poet Benjamin Zephaniah, Alan McGee and legendary journalist Everett True. The new Millennium has seem a resurgence of interest in this small, brave performer who battled on with his music through many travails and now seem set for new appreciation by a whole new generation charmed by his stripped down honesty and integrity.
